Cigar humidor
A cigar humidor is a box, variable in size, able to keep inside from one cigar to several hundreds. To preserve freshness a cigar humidor is made out of Spanish cedar and seals hermetically to create inside the conditions that are perfect for storing cigars. A cigar is at its best in a temperature of 21 degrees, and in a humidity of 70-80 percent. A good cigar humidor will be able to maintain these conditions for prolonged periods of time.
A cigar humidor that can't control humidity or a bad one will increase humidity too much, causing cigars to fill up with mold. Good humidors have a special device that will retain water and distill it gradually maintaining a stable humidity. Some come with a hydrometer to show the humidity level inside the cigar humidor.
Mold appears as white, gray or blue-green fuzzy "grass". Cigars with mold must be removed immediately from the healthy cigar humidor or you run the risk of infecting the Spanish cedar and this will eventually ruin your whole collection.
Do not confuse mold with bloom. Bloom is the essential oils of the tobacco leaf surfacing from inside the cigar. They are tiny droplets of crystals and will make your cigar look whitish, this tells you it's a good, strong, tasty cigar. Turn around your cigars to spread the bloom evenly every few months.
If your cigar humidor runs out of water, your precious cigars will dry up and crack, loosing their taste. Cigars are very sensitive to climate, and if you purchase a box of cigars and are not planing to smoke them all in two or three days, you are gonna need a cigar humidor to preserve your cigars. Well stored cigars can be kept several years and taste better with time. Connoisseurs won't touch a new cigar, they will store it at least four months to refine its taste. New cigars tend to have a harsh taste, aged cigars are milder.
A perfect option to store one to five cigars in a cigar humidor is the traveler's version. These are small and can be taken everywhere preserving the cigar for a trip or a special moment. Even short flights can ruin a cigar if poorly stored, that's why a cigar humidor becomes an important option, avoiding the disappointment of opening a cigar that will practically crumble on your hands because it has become too dry.
A larger cigar humidor for home is also a good choice, with so many great looking models and designs of great taste, you will have no trouble finding one that suits your needs.
